Again, I Begin Again.

To Have and Have Not Hemingway’s fourth novel, To Have and Have Not, was published in 1937. Today, July 1, 2009 – some 72 years later – I begin reading it.

Better late than never, eh?

As with the previous three Hemingway novels, I purposely avoided reading reviews, Wiki entries, fan blog comments, etc., before starting the book. I want the book to stand on its own merits, divorced from 20/20 hindsight and the pronouncements of Hemingway pundits and purists.

I look forward to discovering what To Have and Have Not has or has not in the way of engrossing writing and interesting characters.

The only Hemingway books I think I’ve read were Old Man and the Sea and Farewell to Arms. Never heard of To Have and Have Not…the title sounds like what happened to the main character from Farewell to Arms (he have’d and then have not’d). I wonder how the characters in this book will fare!
